Internal circlips are designed to fit in a groove inside the bore for the retention of components such as bearings or seals. Once installed in the groove the protruding part of the ring or the shoulder is what holds the assembly in place. They should be installed or removed with internal circlip pliers therefore the depth within the bore or housing is limited by the reach of these pliers.
